Colorado Portraiture | Choosing Your Photographer

Chances are most of you have hired a photographer to capture some event in your life thus far. Some of you, Im sure, have been completely happy with their choice and others, maybe didn't have the best experience. When you are choosing the artist to help capture these moments, it is so important that you pick the one that compliments your lifestyle. Many portrait photographers have a speciality and they are damn good at it. You'll want to know who you are and what you are looking for from your photographer. Keep reading to find out the most important things to look for when searching for your photographer, questions to ask your potential photographer and at the end you'll see some images I made from a recent fall family session in Denver.

Important aspects to keep in mind...

Personality: Your photographer will be capturing some intimate moments for you and in order for him/her to get close enough to you and create, you have to feel comfortable letting them in. You will want a photographer who's personality compliments yours. They are making you in art form so its essential to be at ease and yourself around this person.

Style: When seeking out your perfect fit photographer, you'll want to pay close attention to their editing style. You want to see a consistency in their work, a style that reads clearly. Most importantly though, make sure their style is one that you desire, one that you can see hanging on the walls of your home for years to come.

Sticker shock: Fine art portraiture of your family, no matter if you are having family session, a child' milestone, a maternity or newborn session, it is an investment. Although seeking out a less expensive photographer may seem like an attractive option, there may be a reason for their low pricing. An experienced photographer will tend to be booked out far in advance and they will be pricing themselves to reflect their talent and speciality.

Stick close to home: Ask your friends who their favorites are. Chances are if they are your friends, you share some commonalities in style and they could have some great recommendations. Some photographers have wonderful referral programs that benefit both the new client and the one that refers. (I do!)

Questions to ask your potential photographer...

How long have you been in business? You'll want to know this because it can help you determine how much experience your potential photographer has had.

What do you specialize in? This is very important because for example, you wouldn't want a photographer who specializes in weddings to be photographing your newborn session. Specializing in one area or another of photography says you do a lot of that work and excel in that area.

Do you limit the number of sessions per month you take? I don't know about you but I want a photographer that is going to be able to give me the attention that I need and paid for. A photographer that limits his/her sessions is setting aside time and incredible service for their clients. Quality over quantity.

What are your session policies? A photography session or package can be a decent investment and you will want to know what policies you photographer has surround his/her services.

Please ask me any questions you may have about hiring a perfectly fit photographer for your next session!
