Colorado Portrait Photographer | Bathtub and Shower Sessions

When I was carrying my daughter, my most favorite and comfortable space to be in was either the bathtub or the shower. One night after work, I actually put a little plastic stool in the shower so I could sit down. The feeling of the hot water pouring over my body was so relaxing and it allowed me to pause, be with my thoughts and pay attention to what my body was needing. Then, once she arrived, again I found myself finding solace in the bathtub with her. In wanting so badly to find comfort during those first few weeks, I’m pretty sure I was in the bathtub everyday. I was amazed at how the water brought me such peace, so I did a little research on the meaning and symbolism of water and was truly impressed to find that it provides deep healing, renewal and purification. It teaches us compassion and wisdom.I loved seeing the parallels between that symbolism and the phase in life I was going through.

Since having this experience for myself, I wanted to do it for my clients. I wanted to offer a window of time to feel the solace and the peace. I also know that the use of water in photography is very powerful, visually. To combine both felt like magic!

Whenever a client expresses interest in a bath or shower session, I experience such a unique blend of excitement and anticipation . For me, these sessions are where the stress of creating meaningful imagery dissipates and is replaced by a sense of certainty about the session's outcome. It's as if I can envision the scenes even before the planning begins. In the realm of bath time photography, I've discovered a space where I can consistently craft images that transcend the ordinary and illustrate the profound connection between mothers and their children, expecting mothers as well as women finding solitude in moments of peace and self love. I believe that parts or even the whole of our true self comes alive through vulnerability and acceptance of whatever is. The letting down of walls and defenses we carry on a regular basis allows for us to truly enjoy the present time. There is a piece to their story that I can only find in this time.

The beauty of bath and shower sessions lies both in the artistic environment  it provides and presence and appreciation of time together that my clients sink into. Despite the varied dynamics of using the element of water, I am able to approach each session with the unwavering confidence that I will capture exactly what I am supposed to. This assurance stems from not just technical proficiency but also a deep understanding of the emotional nuances inherent in such moments. I am a mom too, I have experienced that deep desire to connect with my body when I was carrying my daughter and then again that deep desire to connect with her when she came into the world.

Beyond documenting the ordinary, bath time sessions offer a canvas for crafting truly artistic imagery. The expecting mother, adorned with the ethereal glow of pregnancy, becomes a muse for capturing images that evoke pause and reflection. The interplay of light, water, and the inherent grace of the moment result in photographs that transcend the mundane and tell a story that goes beyond words.

In every bath time session, I find not only the joy of creating art but also the privilege of immortalizing intimate moments that hold profound meaning for the families I work with. The stress that initially accompanies the idea of capturing such vulnerable moments transforms into a sense of creative empowerment. It is a journey where I, as a photographer, am invited into the sacred space of familial bonds, armed with the knowledge that I can craft images that tell stories of love, connection, and anticipation. Bath time sessions, for me, are more than just a photoshoot; they are an exploration of the tender and beautiful moments that make up the tapestry of life.
